Wedding Speeches-Knowing When and Who Should Toast

Wedding speeches are a great tradition to help celebrate the bride and groom after they’ve taken their vows. These ‘toasts’ are usually offered by those closest to the guests of honor; best friends or family members. As one plans his or her nuptials, it’s important to keep in mind that there are no set rules when it comes to offering the opportunity of a speech. Start by deciding how many people you’d like to speak during this special time. It can be as few as the maid of honor and bestman, or include multiple family members and friends. Make sure the ones you choose to speak will contribute to the affair in a light and meaningful way without adding too much to the evening’s itinerary. Guests tend to groan at those who carry on too long or offer too much unnecessary information about the subject. Remember, you want these speeches to be a tribute, not a roast! Also, make sure you space out these speeches between courses so your guests’ palates are pleased. People tend to respond better when well fed. Consider moving speeches to another part of the weekend; like a rehearsal or brunch. This way, you can give everyone who’s important the spotlight without taking away from the main stage. However you incorporate this element into your big day, make sure you feel confident about your decision, and try not to worry about too much about how it will affect others. Plan ahead and enjoy the added entertainment!
