Black Tie Optional?

The tone of a wedding is usually detected upon opening the invitation. The paper stock, colors, or mere calligraphy of the message can convey the formality of the event. But, sometimes guests wonder, ‘What is the appropriate attire for the affair?’ Sometimes there are multiple events surrounding the nuptials that can also lead to questions of ‘What to wear,’ and ‘When?’ If the invitation reads black tie optional, play it safe with a black tuxedo for men and a chic long dress or separates with pants for women. Women can dress up their outfit with stylish shoes; chic stilettos for example. This dress code may also apply to cocktail attire for women. But, men can go a bit more casual, maybe suit coat and tie or tie optional if it’s more of a casual cocktail setting. If the invite reads casual, men usually choose slacks and sport coat or a tailored shirt, and women can play with their dress length and shoe, (strappy sandals or flats). Sometimes you may be asked to dress in traditional attire to honor the ceremony or cultural tradition. Be respectful of the bride and grooms’ heritage when choosing the proper clothing. Many couples may offer suggestions or color palettes to coordinate with the site and season. Always check the weather and location to determine the best fit if unspecified. Coordinate with your date and ask other guests if you’re familiar with the invite list. Feel confident in your choice(s) by the time you arrive, so you’re sure to have a good time without worrying whether or not you fit in.
